Bleach is a harsh chemical that a lot of people aren’t really keen on using in their house. It is dangerous and can prove to be very hazardous to young children. Having a homemade bleach alternative on hand is a great way to keep things bright without the danger.
Now, there are some instances where we’ll use bleach here on the homestead, but they’re few and far between.
So, when looking for a safe alternative I wanted to find things that we could easily mix together and store above the washer so it’s out of the reach of the kids.
I knew that hydrogen peroxide could be used for brightening clothes, but wasn’t sure how well it would work. However, after seeing many people talk about using it in their DIY bleach blends I knew it had to be worth it.

I’m adding Lemon Essential Oil and Thieves Essential Oil to this blend, but that’s just for smell purposes in my opinion. I love the way they both smell.
If you wanted to add other options then go for it. Lavender would make a really great smell also.
We’re really trying to kick the bleach out of our house for good, and once we find something that will kill poison ivy or chiggers we’ll probably give it the boot. But, for now, it serves specific purposes.
On our clothes, we’ll be using this mixture and I’m ready for it.
Why Use A Bleach Alternative
Bleach is a manmade chemical first and foremost and it’s also really hazardous. People lived for centuries without bleach and I’d like to get back to as natural as possible on the homestead.
Other people might have skin irritation or some sort of reaction to bleach. I know some folks that will have lung issues if they come close to breathing the fumes.
Like any chemical, it can burn the skin, the eyes, and if somehow ingested could cause severe intestinal issues and even death.
Not everyone wants to kick the bleach out of their house and that’s completely their choice, but if you’re looking for an easy homemade bleach alternative you might just like this one.
